Guaranteed auto-slowness and not as nice as the recent one on BAT but I like it. Looks mid-70s to me, which would give it a 2.2l motor in NA spec. Rusty doom or cheap OBRC fun?

Paul,
Do I try to convince you that verts are pointless? Don't make me start posting links to Mercury Grand Marquis for a new 'Land Barge Lovers Club'! I don't actually like them, but I'd do it. Maybe I should raise funds to buy this car for Swagg just so it sits in front of your house? :tongue1:

Hmmm 4 doors are more of my brother's forte.
But if you need to sell the Datsun, I would love to talk finances and have an opportunity to peruse some paperwork :D

Funny you should mention that:) I went to check out the Toyota last night and have a deposit on it. The PO (Jon) is a pretty cool guy who has had it for over 10 years and looked after it pretty well. I think I scored a few points by showing up in something retro-Japanese.
I don't have much paperwork on the Datsun but fire away on questions and I'll answer what I can. Al and Shocka have seen the car too. Have you seen the car or just Jesse?

No i haven't personally, just Jesse.
He says it's a pretty cool looking car and although i'd kill for an e21, I wouldn't mind having some 'stance-y' fun with a retro-JDM.
What sort of condition is it in rust wise and maitenance?
manual or auto?
Is it true it can beat a Skoda?!

I don't have any pix handy, but there are a few in my original intro thread here:
http://www.bcbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2863
it would be fun to see what could be done with the car's stance. Maybe some 510 stuff is adaptable? I haven't done anything beyond maintenance since that's all money out of the 02 and M5.
Rust-wise it has some surface stuff and the back valence is not pretty when you look closely, but Al had it up in the air and didn't see anything scary where it counts. Paint is pretty oxidized but it's all there.
Maintenance-wise you should be good. Brakes needed work but that is sorted now, fresh oil in motor and tranny, fresh plugs, just adjusted the valves. I found a maintenance manual online and it's a good reference.
Sadly it's an auto but there are 4-speeds around and I've read the swap is easy. Depends on how long you'd think about keeping it.
and yes, Chris's head is still hanging in shame as he plots ways to reclaim his Skoda's honour.

Wait wait wait, am I seeing an OBRC car in Swaggs future? Nice! I've driven the Datsun down highway 1 a couple times, it drives pretty decent, has ample power, heater works great, brakes are fixed, tires are new etc. And as much as I hate to admit it, its a pretty cool car. You could do FAR worse, Swagg.
As for rust, its quite tidy actually. Nothing structural underneath, its nice and straight as well.
Manual swap, suspension tweak, and some wheels. Think Panasport, etc.
Gonna have to call this place BCBimmers/Datsuns.com.

Super cool! I think the Corona is one of mt favorite Toyotas, esp. the mid-late 60s incarnation...Good job and can't wait to see it! Look like I'd better get moving off my duff and buy more stuff...

Buying a used car is all about getting a good vibe from the PO. We know Bruce, and Al that has done the work on it, so I'd be pretty comfortable purchasing this car. Maybe you should just get it and keep in the driveway till you're finished school?

Thanks Jesse. You know, I think I could offer you a special $45 rebate if you guaranteed you'd park the car in a high visibility location in front of your house, plus another $5 rebate when you provide a photo of Paul getting out of the car where his friends can see him.
I'm around Sunday if you want to take a look. PM me so we can sort out details. I will need to keep the Datsun until next Saturday though since the Corona owner left town today and won't be back until next Friday.

Personally, I think the Datsun is an awesome first car. RWD, dependable, slow, retro-cool(ish), and well sorted by Bruce. Don't automatically discount it Paul. Set of wheels, little drop, maybe a cheapish respray, stereo upgrade, and a manual swap. Hell, maybe flat black it with red wheels or something. Cool.

actually to be honest i'd go with something ridiculous like these

I never saw that side of it, it's not like Datsun have been driven as hard either right?. You never know with BMW, M20's are estimated to blow at around like 330,xxx KM's i heard.
What about the B210? they run long and strong?
I'll coordinate with Jesse and be PM'ing you i think.

Nuther bonus is that it will be cheap as dirt to maintain. At least compared to a BMW.

can you elaborate please? both are imports wouldn't it be roughly the same?
Or are you saying it would be more reliable?

Japanese parts are typically much cheaper than German parts. Cheap 10w30 oil, cheap filters, cheap engine parts etc. Reliability will be about the same, but actual parts and service costs should be much lower.

Here are the facts...
Chicks dig guys who rebel against their parents, and they also dig guys who are sensitive and care about the environment. Buying this Datsun, and an acoustic guitar to go with it, accomplishes both.
Thus, not only would you own a cost effective piece of stylish Japanese 1970s engineering, but buying this car would also guarantee you sexual relations with many attractive young women, and I mean 'statistically you'll get gonorrhea' many. That's right.
I don't see why this deal has not gone through yet...

Whoa, you guys have been busy. Got your PMs.
A few quick answers but then I'm out for most of the day:
- bold circle is 4 x 4.5 so the BMW fitment won't work. I have seen some other wheels come up on CL that would fit, e.g. Panasport. You could always paint the steelies until you found something you like.
- the A15 engine went in millions of cars and is as indestructable as an m10
- parts are cheap, you just need to plan ahead since you can't just drop into Lordco. Jack's foreign auto had a valve cover gasket for $10, and I found an online source in the states. if you want to get really ambitious i've seen a few cheap parts cars come and go too for trim and interior parts
- good idea on the learning opportunities beyond just mechanical. The paint could use some love but you wouldn't have to worry about screwing up anything you wanted to keep for a long time if it didn't work out.
I'll check back in tonight and am around tomorrow.

BTW, I think with the rebate we can agree on your proposed price.
Nate - you got a Civic? The 210 is mighty but wouldn't stand a chance unless it's a Mk 1.

I'll still buy you a coffee next time you show, but you're not getting any hugs :D No hard feelings I hope - just getting in a shot at you after all your cruel digs against those classic car designs from the 60s - 80s that I truely love.
Jesse and Brett - amazing work keeping straight faces around the house the last week. Please post a few choice "Paul quotes" from the last few weeks.

Well I got ripped into pretty hard the other day on the way to hockey about "spending my money wisely" if i was serious about the Datsun, Paul definately would have steered me away through that argument. It was hard to fight my case about wanting the sorry 210 :(
Also hard to keep a straight face, I'm pretty sure he caught a hint of it and asked "if this is all just a joke to get the Datsun in my driveway, it's not working because you are going to have a tough time convincing me that the Datsun is a worthy first car, and I still have a say on that"
Props to Pops.
