On behalf of Bruce and myself, I'd like to introduce the Obscure Classics Automobile Club (OCAC) which can be found on the web at www.obscureclassics.com !
Evolved from the heady and dramatic early days of Oddball Racing Club, the OCAC is dedicated to interesting and special cars from the 1960s-1980s located in the Pacific Northwest.
While some classic cars were popular in their day and have large followings and clubs, others classics, due to their limited numbers or popularity in North America, simply do not. This is where the OCAC comes in.
So, if you own, have an interest in, or are comfortable being seen in a European car made prior to December 31st 1989 from a limited production make, or a make no longer selling in North America, or a Korean car from the 1980s, or a Japanese car from the 1960s-70s, or an American European import such as Merkur, please come and join us!
Chris T.
Bruce L.
Executive Directors OCAC.

No Doubt.
Also the wheelbase on the car was measure in the US when it first arrived and was found to be different on both sides.

Adam,
Mark had OK'd putting up a separate OCAC sub-forum here since the OCAC site isn't equipped, and even if it did it would be pretty dead. I've suggested Chris PM you about this. If Chris agrees with this, you can move the OBRC tagged threads there as a start. As an added bonus this should protect those with sensitive eyes from seeing non-BMW content.
Thanks in advance.

Hey, I drove a LeCar on the autobahn in 1979, and it was one of the worst motoring experiences of my life. I was being passed by lorries.

Nice. My first car was an Austin Marina, one of the worst cars ever made. Top Gear even confirms this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UJfbunHVuc&feature=fvw
Jeremy Clarkson rags on the body styling... I happened to like it (it was like a slightly curvier Datsun 510); it was the mechanics that were shite. It seemed like I had it in the shop every other month.
Anyway, it probably falls under "C) A Vehicle manufactured by a large production European manufacturer that has little or no chance or potential of ever being popular or collectable in the present and or future. Examples include the VW Dasher and Type 4."

Thanks for all the support!
I should point out that though that it isn't the crappy car club...Renault Alpines, Lancia Delta Integrales, NSU Ro.80s, and Jensen Interceptors are very welcome too.
I just get so bored of modern cars, and there were so many cool machines in the past (cool because they were stylin', performing, or just unintentionally anti-status quo) that we felt something had to be done. I certainly wouldn't turn away a special W123 benz or 2002 either...though I don't get the final say...
As for the Cosworth Vega, it doesn't quite fit, and there are Chevy clubs, but if someone actually wanted to join with a nice 70s-soaked example, I'd definitely encourage it...Now a Mercury Capri...has anyone seen one of these in years (and I don't mean the later Mustang clone)?
Would a Fiat X1/9 fit the bill?

We have associate membership status for those who don't currently have a ride. Minor difference but we are hoping to build up a group that can put an actual meet together. Really, we're happy for any interest and support.
Adam - the 77 Corolla is in for sure. The big question is would you still want to have one today?

You know with the inclusion of Japanese cars like 210s and Corolla Liftbacks, you're really just setting yourselves up to be the "shitbox $400 beater car club of BC". In my humble opinion, you need to keep this to European only, with an exception for Merkurs and the like.

Not necessarily Al. Sure, my 210 is crap, but it's a stop gap measure. I'll bring up the standard as soon as I can. You've seen some of the clean examples put up on BAT, or even locally. There was a $2000 210 floating around a while ago that had had quite a bit of love.
There were enough interesting designs coming out of the US and Asia in the past that deserve some appreciation.

Yeah I agree. But I think the majority of these things still on the road are typically unloved pieces of poop. And if I had a rustyass Corolla in the garage, I'd join your club, just to be a part of a club. The majority of old Japanese cars I see running around are multicoloured, and driven by pot smoking hippies who wouldn't even want to be part of a club. To them its just a cheap old beater. Hopefully I'm wrong on that though, but I dunno....
Double02
12-30-2009, 08:59 PM
I think you've pretty much identified the self-governing mechanism to rule out too many crapped out Japanese beaters in the club. Most people driving them are in them because they just don't care. Those that are likely to join the club would want to fix that piece of junk up.
It's been hard for me not to try to clean up the Datsun, but it's too far gone and I'll wait for a more worthy candidate.

My first car was an orange 77 corrolla lift back. Bit rusty and if I had the coin back then it would have been fixed and repanted completely. What a great car that was. It had the black metal fins on the back window. I'll have to find a pick.

My first was a datsun 310gx. That would fit the bill nicely here.
Car was black and rusty originally, then I bought new doors and hood from the wrecker and got the required white Earl Schieb $199 paint job.
Car was totalled sitting on my parents lawn by a Drunk in a hit and run.

I'm guessing an 83 scirocco would be too common for this gig? Too bad, if I can raise the cash I am contemplating a G60 swap.
I've owned a few but it would be hard to get my hands on some of them again;
Volvo 122 wagon, Volvo 122 sedan, Volvo 240 wagon, Hillman Minx, Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV, about 5 Austin Minis, 2 Merkur XR4Ti's, and 2 DeTomaso Innocenti Turbo's (wish I could get my hands on one again).
I'm sure I had others but thats what comes to mind at the moment.

I nominate the chevy corvair and the pontiac fiero for the north american side! Oh oh and the original olds toronado! All three represented complete departures from the traditional american vehicle and it is a rare occasion to see any of them floating around.

Good idea, except where it says 'big parking lot'. Medium sized driveway might be better...

I think you have to join regardless of what you own today - you could be like the Rip Torn coach character from Dodgeball! What year was the Alfetta, and how did you find it and the Merkur?

Corvair is on the list, although it is marginal since it does have a very strong fan base already. I saw a show with about 10 great examples of these in California one time. The ones with the V8 swaps are very cool. The Fiero is too new for current consideration, although it may eventually be added. Toronados are very interesting (and I imagine very scary with the FWD V8 - 4 wheel drum brake combo) , but we've decided to limit North American cars to compacts.
I think an admissibility pub night discussion would make a good early event. I'll suggest a date when I get back to town.

Cool W123 - I remember that one being for sale a few years back? Strictly though it doesn't count, as there is a Merc club and these were quite mainstream in their day, though yours is a Euro example which makes it very cool...

The Alfetta was a 1978 looked like the GTV6 but had a lowly 1.8 four in it.
I was working in Alberta for a little while about 9 years ago, saw it in the paper for sale bought it for $500 it had been sitting for 5 years. I changed one of the rubber fuel lines in it and drove it back to Victoria the next day. Car ran great old mechanical fuel injection with individual throttle bodies. Engine in the front trans in the back with inboard disk brakes fun little car.
the Merkur had been sitting for a while as well but was a great car, kind of heavy and I am sure nothing like the european counterparts
