View Full Version : Is my (insert year, make and model) an OCAC car?

There have been a few questions about whether a car qualifies as an OCAC car. The basic requirements are on the website here:
http://www.obscureclassics.com/membership-a3.htm
There is also a downloadable list of accepted cars. But, feel free to ask specific questions here. Saying that, we're a pretty inclusive group so would be unlikely to turn anybody with a cool older car away from a meet.

That's a W124 right? I don't know Mercs well. You're telling me there isn't a local old-school Merc board that would welcome this? Bring it out for a meet but I'd prefer that 77 Corolla.

LOL, yeah they would probably.
The corolla unfortunately was prbably crushed shortly after I sold it for $200 :(

Who else agrees that Bruce and company should be limited to one of these wack mobile threads per month?
I'm JK buddy, these threads are like visiting a garage sale. All kinds of interesting junk that you would never want to own:D
I myself DO enjoy reading them.

My Carolla was awesome.
Bright orange, rusty rear drivers quarter. Brown interior.
Black metal window louvers on the lift back
cheap "mag" wheels, had white letter dunlops on it when I bought it, but they were cracking up so had to be replaced.
It was an Sr5. I spent more money on it in repairs than I want to remember, and I was 16 at the time and just working at McDs.
The drivers window had to be pulled up every time the door was closed.
I can't find my picture, I know I have one, but I dont know where it is.

Cool...
The real question is...not if, but when are white letter tires coming back?

Ok my scanner is f'd.
here is a very bad, and i mean very bad picture of a picture of my first car.
1979 Datsun 310Gx
Original black, repainted for <$250 at Earl Schieb(sp) white.
Red cloth interiour. Had 150k on her when a drunk rear ended it parked on my lawn and wrote it off. It smoked like hell. Looked like a diesel train going down the road.
O yeah, it had a dogleg 5-speed tranny. lol

Sure that would work. I actually haven't seen many of these in non-hatch form. These were FWD and eventually became Pulsars I believe.
So how was it to drive? Did you ever have it when it wasn't beat and smoking?

It was a hatch car 2-door. It wasn't bad to drive really, although it had LOTS of understeer like m,ost FWD cars.
I bought it from the Original owner for $350 and it always burned oil. Not a bad first car actually as i got to cut my teeth on it mechanically.

My first standard was a 1969 Mazda 1500 4spd. The seller was building a deck in his backyard when I went to look at it. He had the trunk lid open and was using it as a sawhorse for his deck planks. There was half a foot of sawdust in the trunk.
He asked me if I drove standard. I said no, he said you wanna try? I thought about it and said what the hell. So having never driven a standard, we shoved the planks off the back and closed the trunk, I got in the driver's, and with a little instruction I was off. 20 minutes later I bought it for $275.
The car was a hilarious wreck. Tall mismatched skinny tires, an appetite for lubricants, a fakey hood scoop, a working 8-track with one tiny tinny speaker in the center of the dash, and an offset double racing skunk stripe. The diff whined so loud in third I used to lug the motor and shove it into fourth around town just to give my ears and eyeteeth a break. The car was stock, aside from the tires, and a honking huge inline radiator hose heater. I was living at home then, and my Dad had a frickin' massive shitfit when I brought it home.
But, I figgered what the hell. For under $300 I could learn how to drive standard, and if I blew it up in the process, I could do so with no harm to my conscience. In the end my dad would steal the damn thing to drive to work when it was -40 or worse, cause it always started and was toasty warm, leaving me to coax the truck into living. I wound up dding it for 5+ yrs going thru two "nice" cars in the meantime. I asked $375 when I sold it and got $325 cause the guy who bought it wanted to replace the tires lol.
It was a mess, but I loved that old beater. I've had a couple others that come close to OCAC, even my current dd/beater just misses the mark with a little bending of the rules lol, but the old Mazda really was it. Because of that car I have never been without at least one standard equipped car since, and it began my love of foreign cars.

Depends on the year. Pre 1979 I'd say definitely. Some of the 79-83 models have potential, but anything after 84 does nothing for me. Any guesses as to what vintage you saw?

Yes, provided it isn't a total beater. I don't think I've seen a photo of it or heard about it so fill us in.
edit: Wait, this is Poon's Dad's e21, right? That's in for sure.
