I almost forgot - The Dacia was sold in Canada for a while. I Romanian liscensed copy of the Renault R12.

Has anyone even seen a Dacia in Canada in the last decade, let alone own one? Can anyone add information or articles about Dacias sold in Canada?

The most I have found is this...

I'm not sure about the Dachia, but the Renault Gordini was sold here,my shop teacher in high school had one fitted out for rallying.
I believe the Gordini was R12 based.
So yeah,I can recall Renault R12s roaming around back in the day but I don't know about the Dacia, maybe Ontario would have been the target market of choice back then.

But now that I think about it,if they were selling Renaults in Canada at that time would Dacia even have been allowed into the same market?

Gordinis were just the Renault performance spec, a la M, AMG, etc. There were Gordini versions of the R5, R8, R12, etc. The still command a pretty good price over the regular models.

I think Dacias were sold through Renault dealerships as the economy models. There wouldn't really have been competition since Dacia kept building R12 based 1300s long after Renault moved on. My guess would be that the initial low cost, rust, and lack of dealer support after Renault pulled out of Canada meant that they are extirpated.

Are you sure about the Renault dealer connection? If that brochure is Canadian, it is advertised as Dacia, and not Dacia by Renault or something like that. Some chap on TTAC said he spotted a pickup version in Ontario I think a decade or so.

Not sure at all. Pure speculation in fact based on the long connection between Renault and Dacia, plus Renault having a dealer network in Canada at the time. I tried a bit of research but as you say, there doesn't seem to be any information.

Maybe you need to track down some Romanian-Canadians and quiz them, or do some searching in French in case there was a Quebec focus.

Edit: How about this article? Can't verify any of it since all the leads seem to be dead end. Looks like I need to retract my theory on the Renault connection. How cool would it be to buy an old Dacia and have a bill of sale with 'Terra Power Tractor Company' letterhead?

"North Americans don't earn the right to drive cars because they aren't first-class mechanics"

LOL love it, that's one funny quote.

In other words..
"There's nothing wrong with our cars."
"Is it our fault you don't know how to rebuild one?"
